Want a More Confident Child? Give Them Something They’re NOT Good At.

We want our kids to feel confident.

So naturally, we tend to steer them toward things they’re good at.

But what if we’re missing one of the best opportunities to build real confidence?

👉 Let them be bad at something.

Let them attempt a cartwheel, even if it doesn’t look like a cartwheel.
Let them crack an egg and accidentally get shell pieces in the bowl.
Let them draw a dog that resembles a potato. 🥔🐶
Let them miss the goal, forget their lines in the school play, or lose the game.
Let them bake cookies that definitely won’t be featured on Pinterest. 🍪
And then resist the urge to step in and fix everything.

Because something important happens when kids face challenges:
They realize they can keep going.

And THAT’S where confidence begins.

Confidence isn’t:

“I’m good at everything.”

It’s:

“I don’t know how to do this…YET.”

🍞 Samantha Sourdough’s Confidence Challenge

This week, encourage your child to choose ONE thing they’re not very good at yet.

Maybe it’s:

⚽ Kicking a soccer ball
🚲 Riding a bike
🥣 Making pancakes
✏️ Drawing
🧩 Completing a difficult puzzle
📚 Reading a challenging book
🎤 Singing in front of someone
👟 Tying their shoes

Then change the question you ask afterward.

Instead of:

❌ “Did you win?”
❌ “Did you get it right?”
❌ “Were you the best?”

Try:

❤️ “What did you learn?”
❤️ “What got easier?”
❤️ “What will you try differently next time?”
❤️ “Are you proud of yourself for trying?”

Because our goal shouldn’t be to raise kids who believe they will always succeed.

It’s to raise kids who believe:

“Even when something is hard, I can figure out what to do next.”

And that’s the kind of confidence Samantha Sourdough can get behind. 🍞💜
