On a sunny morning in Bakerville, PJ and her wiry-haired terrier, Pepper, were buzzing with excitement. The first-ever Pet Parade was happening that afternoon, and PJ had spent weeks carefully creating a bright and colorful costume for Pepper. The outfit sparkled with ribbons and shiny bells, and PJ could not wait to show everyone how wonderful Pepper looked.
As PJ gathered their things and headed to the door, she felt her fingers tingle with excitement. But when they reached the gate, Pepper froze. She planted her paws firmly on the ground and refused to move.
Confused, PJ knelt beside her furry friend. “What’s wrong, Pepper? Don’t you want to walk in the parade?” she asked, scratching behind Pepper’s ears.
But Pepper only wagged her tail weakly and let out a quiet whimper.
PJ frowned, unsure why her usually enthusiastic companion suddenly seemed so uncertain.
The Problem
Then PJ remembered something important. Not long ago, Pepper had been startled by a very loud firecracker during a holiday. The booming noise had frightened her so much that she stayed under the bed for hours afterward.
Suddenly, it all made sense. The loud music, the cheering crowds, and the noisy parade might feel overwhelming for Pepper. PJ hugged Pepper tightly and whispered, “It’s okay, Pep. We do not have to go if you are not comfortable. I will stay right here with you.”
But as PJ looked down the street, she could see the parade already starting. Bright floats rolled by, children waved flags, and other pets strutted proudly in costumes. PJ’s heart ached with disappointment. She had worked so hard on Pepper’s outfit, and she had been so excited to join her triends. Now she’s worried she will miss the whole thing.
Your Challenge
Friendship and courage are not always about doing the biggest or boldest thing. Sometimes they are about listening, adapting, and showing compassion for the ones we love.
Can you think of a way for PJ to still be part of the parade while also keeping Pepper safe and comfortable?
• Could PJ find a new way to include Pepper without overwhelming her?
• Could Pj participate in a different role while Pepper stays calm nearby?
• Or could PJ and Pepper work together on a creative compromise?
