With Whitney Wheat and the Trail of Colorful Crumbz
Fall is the perfect time to get outside, explore nature, and connect with your child. Join Whitney Wheat and her Breadcrumbz friends on a Trail of Colorful Crumbz — a fun, hands-on activity that helps kids notice the world around them, appreciate differences, and see how beautiful change can be!
🌳 Objective:
Encourage kids to explore nature, observe the changes in seasons, and build curiosity through collecting and comparing leaves — while developing confidence in expressing their own thoughts and observations.
What You’ll Need:
-
A small paper bag or basket for collecting leaves
-
A notebook or My Crumby Nature Journal (printable version will be available soon!)
-
Crayons or colored pencils
-
Glue or clear tape
-
Optional: magnifying glass for extra “leaf detective” fun!
Activity Steps:
-
Head Outside Together!
Take a walk through your yard, a park, or a nature trail. Remind your child, like Rachel Rye says, “Every leaf tells a story — let’s find them!” -
Collect 5–10 Leaves.
Look for leaves of different shapes, colors, and sizes. Talk about how, even though the leaves are all different, they all come from the same trees — just like people! -
Create a “Leaf Rainbow.”
When you get home, spread out the leaves and sort them by color — from lightest yellow to deepest red. Arrange them into a rainbow pattern and glue them onto paper. -
Make a Leaf Book.
Label each leaf with:-
Where you found it
-
Its color and shape
-
One word that describes it (example: “crinkly,” “bright,” “bold”)
-
-
Reflect Together.
Use Rachel Rye’s Reflection Questions:-
What made each leaf unique?
-
How are people a lot like leaves?
-
Why is it okay that we don’t all look or think the same?
-
Bonus Idea: Leaf Trading Game!
Play a mini “fair trade” game inspired by Whitney Wheat and her fairness lessons!
Each person picks one leaf they think is the most special and offers a “trade.”
Talk about what makes something valuable — it’s not always size or color, but meaning!
Breadcrumbz Lesson:
Just like no two leaves are alike, no two people are either — and that’s what makes the world so colorful and fun!
