Whole-grain baking can add fiber and other nutrients to foods, and whole rye flour retains the grain’s bran and germ. Rye also has relatively little gluten-forming protein, which is why 100% rye loaves can be quite dense. Combining rye with bread or all-purpose flour creates a lighter loaf that’s likely to be more approachable for children.

It’s best to start children with a mild rye loaf, rather than a dark, strongly flavored rye. Light rye recipes combine rye and wheat flour specifically to produce a lighter texture and subtler rye flavor, making this style a good introduction.

Let’s give RYE a TRY!

Peanut butter sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, chicken nuggets…sound familiar?

But just like making new friends or trying a new activity, trying a new recipe can be an exciting adventure. That’s why Rachel Rye loves encouraging kids to step outside their comfort zones and discover something new.

Today, she’s introducing us to a delicious sandwich that just happens to share her name: The Rachel Sandwich!

The Curious History of the Rachel Sandwich

The Rachel sandwich is considered the “sister sandwich” of the famous Reuben sandwich. While the Reuben typically contains corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and dressing on rye bread, the Rachel offers a slightly different twist. Most versions substitute turkey or pastrami for the corned beef and creamy coleslaw for the sauerkraut, while still featuring delicious rye bread and Swiss cheese. The exact origin of the Rachel sandwich is somewhat mysterious, but food historians have found references to Rachel sandwiches dating back to the early 1930s. Some believe the name may have originated from the popular 1871 song “Reuben and Rachel.” Others think it simply evolved as a variation of the Reuben as restaurants experimented with new flavors. No matter where it came from, the Rachel sandwich has become a beloved deli favorite throughout America.

Why Rachel Rye Loves Rye Bread

Rachel Rye believes rye bread deserves more attention.

Rye bread has a unique flavor that is slightly earthy, hearty, and delicious.
