Have you ever felt so excited that you couldn’t wait? Or maybe you’ve been frustrated because something wasn’t happening as quickly as you wanted? Pepper knows that feeling!

One morning, Pepper was ready for her walk. Her leash waited by the door, her tail was wagging, and her paws were practically dancing across the floor.

But there was one little problem: PJ Pumpernickel wasn’t ready yet!

Pepper barked, bounced, and nudged PJ’s shoes toward her.

“Just a few more minutes, Pepper!” PJ explained.

But Pepper didn’t want to wait a few more minutes. She wanted to go NOW!

That’s when PJ had an idea.

“Pepper, I think we need to practice something called patience, and I know just how to do it!”

She reached for a clear bottle and some colorful glitter.

“Let’s make a Pause Bottle!”

What’s a Pause Bottle?

A Pause Bottle (sometimes called a calming or sensory bottle) is a simple activity that helps children visualize what happens when they experience big emotions.

When the bottle is shaken, the glitter swirls wildly through the water, much like our thoughts and feelings when we’re excited, impatient, frustrated, or angry.

But something interesting happens when we stop shaking the bottle.

The glitter gradually settles.

And just like that glitter, we can give ourselves a little time to settle, too.

The goal isn’t to stop having big feelings. It’s to learn that we don’t have to act on every feeling the moment it arrives.

Let’s Make Pepper’s Pause Bottle!

Recommended ages: 4–9 (with adult assistance)

Time needed: Approximately 10–15 minutes to assemble, plus plenty of opportunities to practice patience afterward.

What You’ll Need

One clear plastic bottle with a secure screw-on lid

Warm water (not hot)

Clear washable school glue

A small amount of glitter

A few drops of food coloring (optional)

A small funnel

Strong waterproof tape or suitable adhesive to secure the lid (adult use only)

A little bit of patience!

Safety note: This is a sealed sensory tool, not a drink or a toy to open. An adult should prepare and secure the bottle, check it regularly for leaks, and supervise its use. Avoid glass containers, water beads, and small loose decorations that could become choking hazards if the bottle breaks or opens. For younger children, a glitter-free version using colored water and clear glue is another option.

Pepper’s Pause and Breathe Challenge

Once your bottle is ready, it’s time to teach Pepper a new trick!

Have your child sit comfortably and place the bottle where they can easily see it. Give it a gentle shake. As the glitter begins swirling, practice PJ’s special patience rhyme together:

🎵 **Pepper’s Pause Bottle Jingle**
Swish and swirl, then let it be,
Watch it settle patiently.
When my feelings start to race,
I take a breath and find my pace.
In goes air, then out it flows,
Watch how slowly the glitter goes.
I can pause, I can wait,
Patience is a skill that’s great!

Repeat the rhyme as often as your child enjoys. Encourage them to breathe slowly and comfortably as they watch the glitter. Remember: there’s no need for children to sit perfectly still or wait for every single piece of glitter to settle. Even a few moments of practicing the pause is progress!

Let’s Talk About Big Feelings!

After trying the activity, use these simple questions to start a conversation:

What happened when we shook the bottle?

Did the glitter settle right away?

What happens inside your body when you get frustrated or impatient?

What could you do while waiting for your feelings to settle?

Can you think of a time when taking a little pause might help you make a better choice?

For younger children, try asking:

“Does your tummy ever feel all swirly when you’re upset?”

This gives children a relatable way to begin recognizing their physical responses to emotions.

Three Ways to Use Your Pause Bottle Every Day

The wonderful thing about Pepper’s Pause Bottle is that it isn’t just a one-time craft. It can become a familiar tool children return to whenever they need a little help managing their emotions.

1. The Waiting Game

Waiting for dinner? Waiting for your turn? Waiting for Mom or Dad to finish something?

Grab the Pause Bottle!

Shake it gently and see whether you can think of three things to do while the glitter settles.

2. The Big Feelings Break

When your child becomes frustrated, angry, or overwhelmed, invite them to use the bottle.

Rather than saying, “Calm down!” try:

“Your feelings seem pretty big right now. Would you like to watch Pepper’s Pause Bottle with me?”

Some children may prefer movement, a hug, or quiet space instead. The bottle is simply another helpful option.

3. The Bedtime Wind-Down

Use the bottle as part of a quiet evening routine.

Dim the lights, give it a gentle shake, and practice PJ’s patience rhyme together.

It’s a lovely opportunity to slow down and reconnect before bedtime.

A Little Reminder for Parents: Patience Takes Practice

Children aren’t born knowing how to manage frustration, delay gratification, or regulate their emotions. These abilities develop over time through experience, supportive relationships, and practice.

And waiting can be particularly difficult for young children because their self-regulation skills are still developing.

That’s why activities like Pepper’s Pause Bottle can be useful.

Instead of simply telling children to be patient, we’re giving them something concrete to practice.

The bottle provides a visual reminder that feelings can change, waiting can be manageable, and we can choose how to respond—even when things don’t happen exactly when we want them to.

And perhaps the most important part?

Practice together when your child is already calm. That way, the bottle becomes a familiar and enjoyable tool rather than something introduced only when they’re upset.

One Final Thought from PJ & Pepper

Pepper still gets excited about going for walks.

Sometimes she even brings PJ her leash before she’s finished breakfast!

But now, whenever her tail starts wagging a little too wildly, PJ reminds her:

“Pause, Pepper! Good things are worth waiting for!”

And while Pepper might not have mastered patience just yet, she’s learning something important.

You don’t have to be perfectly patient to get better at being patient.

Just take it one little paw at a time. 🐾
