Have You Ever Tried Something New and Loved It?

Rachel Rye has a question for you:

Today, she’s introducing us to a delicious sandwich that just happens to share her name: The Rachel Sandwich!

The Curious History of the Rachel Sandwich

The Rachel sandwich is considered the “sister sandwich” of the famous Reuben sandwich. While the Reuben typically contains corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and dressing on rye bread, the Rachel offers a slightly different twist. Most versions substitute turkey or pastrami for the corned beef and creamy coleslaw for the sauerkraut, while still featuring delicious rye bread and Swiss cheese. The exact origin of the Rachel sandwich is somewhat mysterious, but food historians have found references to Rachel sandwiches dating back to the early 1930s. Some believe the name may have originated from the popular 1871 song “Reuben and Rachel.” Others think it simply evolved as a variation of the Reuben as restaurants experimented with new flavors. No matter where it came from, the Rachel sandwich has become a beloved deli favorite throughout America.

Rachel Rye’s Kid-Friendly Rachel Sandwich

Ingredients

  • 2 slices rye bread
  • 3-4 slices turkey breast
  • 2 slices Swiss cheese
  • ¼ cup prepared coleslaw
  • 1 tablespoon Thousand Island dressing
  • Butter for grilling

 

Directions

  1. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread.
  2. Place one slice, butter side down, in a skillet.
  3. Add Swiss cheese, turkey, coleslaw, and dressing.
  4. Top with the second slice of bread, butter side up.
  5. Cook over medium heat until golden brown.
  6. Carefully flip and cook the other side until the cheese melts.
  7. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

The holidays are a perfect time to sprinkle kindness like confetti — and who better to lead the way than The Breadcrumbz? ✨ This year, create a Holiday Kindness Countdown with your kids — a fun, meaningful way to prepare for the holidays while teaching the power of generosity, empathy, and connection.

Each day leading up to the holidays, Penelope Pumpernickel, Rachel Rye, Samantha Sourdough, and Whitney Wheat will inspire your kids to do one simple act of kindness. By the end of the countdown, your family will have built a tradition that warms more than just your home. ❤️

What You’ll Need

  • A small bulletin board, poster board, or a string with clothespins

  • 24 envelopes, small bags, or folded cards

  • Markers, stickers, and ribbon

  • A list of 24 kindness activities (see ideas below!)

  • The Breadcrumbz characters (printables, cutouts, or drawings!)

How to Create Your Countdown

  1. Decorate Your Display
